Manistique means “Unamanitigong” that means Vermillion or the color of the river, in the language of the Indian Tribe that first settled in this area. But if you ask for an interpretation, most visitors to this area would translate the name as “serenity”. As tourists have known for more than 100 years Manistique / Schoolcraft County is a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you.
