Hello and Welcome to Manistique and Schoolcraft
County!
What does Manistique mean? Manistique means “Unamanitigong” that means
Vermillion or the color of the river, in the language of the Indian
Tribe that first settled in this area. But if you ask for an interpretation,
most visitors to this area would translate the name as “serenity”.
As tourists have known for more than 100 years Manistique / Schoolcraft
County is a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you.
It’s a piece of vintage, small town America where you leave your stress
behind at the city limits and mellow out with a variety of fun filled
activities and events.
Visitors trade traffic jams and hectic work schedules for scenic beauty
and a unique collection of shops, restaurants, along with interesting
places to visit. Activities abound at Indian Lake State Park. Visitors
enjoy walking Manistique’s scenic Boardwalk. Golfers can play at Indian
Lake Golf and County Club or Stoney Point Golf Course; History Buffs
can tour Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, and Historic Fayette Town site.
Fun lovers can head for miles of sandy beach and outdoor adventure.
Anyone wanting more exercise can hike in nearby Hiawatha National
Forest. Many view the historically significant Water Tower and Siphon
Bridge. The most frequent question asked at the Chamber is about Palms
Book State Park “BIG SPRINGS” (Kitch-iti-kipi). Two hundred feet across,
the forty foot deep Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan’s largest Spring. Over
10,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone.
The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degree Fahrenheit.
By means of a self operated observation raft, visitors are guided
to vantage points overlooking fascinating underwater features and
fantasies.
With over 114 miles of groomed snowmobile
trails and numerous lakes, whatever your pleasure is, Schoolcraft
County has something for everyone. Tourists are treated to the same
diversity when it comes to bedding down for the night. When tourists
arrive at the Chamber, they can pick from a variety of Motels, Resorts,
Campgrounds, and Bed-and Breakfast Inns. No matter what the season,
Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter, Schoolcraft County is a place to
unwind and mellow out.
